Platten’s will be one of the first to trial the 4 Day Week Global Pilot Programme, offering employees a paid day off each week. The initiative prioritises a healthy work-life balance, based on co-founder Andrew Barnes’ 100:80:100 principle: 100% of the pay, for 80% of the time, with the commitment to deliver 100% of the output.
This 6-month trial is the first of its kind in the UK, so Platten’s is taking some revolutionary steps here! Our manager Luke explains why he chose to join:
“Hospitality is famed for long, unsociable hours,” he explains. “I knew we had to change our thinking and our structure.”
“I read the 4 Day Week book by Barnes last year and thought it was a fantastic idea. Platten’s values encompass the 4 day week with benefits from every angle.”
Platten’s successfully launched a two-day-on, two-day-off pattern last year. Then, the opportunity for the 4-day work week pilot appeared: “We jumped at the opportunity to learn from the experts in the field.”
Luke wants to prove that it’s not only possible, but a “win-win”. Platten’s will remain open as usual and salaries will not change despite the reduced hours. He puts it simply: “Platten’s gets the value, the team gets the time.”
Of course, this requires a great amount of collaboration and what Luke calls an “abundance team mentality”. Employees can opt in individually, agreeing on Barnes’ 100:80:100 principle.
“The team has to be culturally ready to make these sorts of changes,” he says. “I am proud to say that we have an incredible team that is ready to support this.”
Luke knows everyone deserves adequate social time, “me time”, and room to achieve non-work-related dreams. It’s also predicted that staff with higher satisfaction and more energy will form a more fulfilled and motivated workforce.
Since founding the 4-day work week pilot in 2019, Charlotte Lockhart and Andrew Barnes have supported hundreds of companies worldwide, and some have made a permanent transition to reduced-hour working.
This trial will of course have no impact on the opening hours at Platten’s and visitors to wells-Next -The -Sea will still be able to enjoy delicious fish and chips throughout the week.
